ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
This 5 day, 4 night workshop will be held in one of the most sought after locations by night sky photographers. It's rock formations and natural arches are accompanied by dark night skies that make this one special spot for landscape and night sky photographers. This workshop will take place during the work-week where we will avoid a majority of the weekend warriors. We will be up most of the night out capturing star trails, timelapse and milky way photographs with a few arches and other rock formations in the park. We will learn how to use our camera's to their maximum potential under a variety of lighting conditions. Simple camera settings can increase your image quality that you may not be aware of. Many clients tell me that their pictures are ready to print right out of the camera, and that is what we are looking for, great images straight out of the camera. The camera is an amazing tool, and a tool that isn't used to it maximum capability most of the time. This is a great place to utilize our cameras and our imagination. We can also have a great time while doing that. Processing your images are very important as well, it's a multi phase process which you will learn to master during this workshop.
Most locations are just beyond the roadside and parking areas. There are other opportunities to hike a bit further for example to Delicate Arch which is about a 3 mile round-trip hike and has a elevation gain of 480 feet. This hike is moderately strenuous, but easy and very doable, frequent "pitstops" is not an issue at all. The view is well worth it. I have seen both the elderly and the younger children, make this hike. Let me know if you think any pre existing health conditions could be an issue.
In 2017, Light painting is no longer allowed in Arches National Park. Our light painting demonstrations will be done outside of the Arches NP at Dead Horse State Park just down the road. With that said, there is a great chance that other people will be walking around at night, using headlamps to find their way around which at times can illuminate some of the formations. Balanced Rock is right off of the main road and cars frequently illuminate the formation as well. So you will still be able to get artificial light at some of the locations if you have the patience. However, this workshop has been planned around the crescent moon setting as the milky way rises, that will give us that splash of light onto the foreground giving it a natural "painted" look. We will also go over blending images of different exposures to grab details out of extremely dark areas since light painting is no longer allowed.

LODGING
We will stay in Moab, UT. I have stayed at the Big Horn Lodge before and it suites me just fine, and I love the look. There are many places to choose from like Comfort Inn, Days Inn, Best Western, Red Stone Inn and many others. Moab is a "happening" little town with lots of places to eat, shops and things to do. You can also camp in the park. If you are interested in camping let me know and I will help you get a site.
