ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

You will spend 7 days and 6 nights photographing some of the most incredible scenery that the desert southwest has to offer. Each day we will head out to capture the morning and evening light as it paints brilliant colors across the some of the most iconic desert landscapes.  As always, we will have night sky & milky way shoots every night in many different locations like Goblin Valley , Dead Horse Point State Park and Arches National Park. We will be passing a new moon allowing us to capturing the milky way under no moon and with some moonlight to illuminate our nightscapes. So, expect those dark desert nights that I love to take you out into and a with a nice mix of moonlight over desert landscapes!  Canyonlands is right there for a day trip on our own.

Some of the locations that we will visit for milky way and night sky photograph inside Arches National Park are: Delicate Arch, Balanced Rock, Park Avenue, Turret Arch, the Fins, and Devils Garden amongst many others. We will also spend a night in Dead Horse State Park to capture stunning night skies and it has always been a client highlight of out trips to this area.

TRAVEL

Travel is not included in this workshop, I would suggest flying into a few places, but it depends if you will be doing some traveling before / after the workshop has ended. Options are Las Vegas, NV / Durango, CO / Grand Junction, CO are some of the closer airports to choose from. Grand Junction, CO is the closest, that is where I will flying into, and out of.

FIRST STOP | GOBLIN VALLEY STATE PARK

Goblin Valley is an International Dark Sky Park which has some of the darkest skies in the US. You cannot see any light domes here; stars go down to the horizon and there aren't many places like this left in the world. We will spend two nights here and explore the "Goblin's" at night and during the day. This will give us double the time to shoot more, and even reshoot and build upon your photographic approach from the first night out in the valley. This will ensure you get the desired image that you are searching for.

After a couple of nights in Goblin Valley, we will take a short drive to Moab, Utah where we will spend the remaining 4 nights. One of those nights we will be at Dead Horse Point State Park capture the Milky Way glide over the Canyonlands thousands of feet below.

Arches National Park, UT

During our stay in the heart of the best landscape scenery that the southwest has to offer, we will take advantage of visiting many iconic locations along the way. We will spend the entire night up at Delicate Arch to photograph Sunset, the Milky Way and sunrise. The other nights in Arches will cover Devils Garden, The Windows Section, Park Avenue, Balanced Rock, the Fins and more.

Delicate Arch Single Exposure

Light Painting is no longer allowed in Arches National Park, but sometimes hikers illuminate the landscape accidentally. This workshop will show you how to achieve your desired results with moonlight and long exposures to greater understanding research, post processing, and merging images.

Our Second night in Arches NP will focus on the Balanced Rock and Turret Arch Locations. Weather may impact a segment of the trip and the schedule may shift to give us the best photographic opportunities possible.

There are some areas in Arches that are hard to get to, like the location with the puddle (above) because of a few factors, but I will work my magic and hopefully secure this area between now and then. Even if we can't make it there, it won't matter, there are dozens of places that we could also shoot at and I always leave this park wanting more, it is what has kept me coming back over the last 20 years.

WEATHER

The weather at the end of April is typically in the 80's and low's in the 50's. Very comfortable!
